Masisi elected Botswana ruling party candidate after Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi pulls out ahead of BDP Congress

The ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) elected President Mokgweetsi Masisi as its candidate for the October vote at the BDP congress on Friday, April 5.

Masisi was nominated by all 14 regions as their preferred candidate to the lead BDP into the 2019 general elections.

The only other contender former foreign affairs minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi withdrew from what she called a “sham” and did not even attend the BDP elective congress held in Kang 400km frm Gaborone.

In his acceptance speech, Masisi promised to “do my utmost best… to lead this party not only to victory in 2019, (but also) in 2024”.

Masisi commended Venson-Moitoi’s “gallant and spirited campaign” and urged party members “to embrace the democratic practice of competition”.

Botswana’s former foreign minister Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi enjoys the backing of Masisi’s predecessor and rival, Ian Khama.
