Turkish main opposition candidate Ekrem Imamoglu declared Istanbul mayor

Ekrem Imamoglu the Istanbul mayoral candidate for Turkish main opposition the Republican People’s Party (CHP) was declared the winner of the March 31 election after a recount.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) candidate Binali Yıldırım came a close second with 4 156 036 votes against 4 169 765 CHP candidate Imamoglu.

This means Turkey’s ruling party lost mayoral elections in the country’s three largest cities – Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir.

Imamoglu’s victory narrowed from 30 000 to 13 729 votes after a recount requested by the AK Parti which is now insisting on a rerun of Instanbul’s mayoral election.
