Zanu PF’s Kidwell Mujuru wins Cowdray Park by-election in Bulawayo: Councillor seat was held by the MDC Alliance

Zanu PF’s Kidwell Mujuru won the Cowdray Park by-election that was held in Bulawayo on Saturday, March 29 a seat that was held by the MDC Alliance.

A total of 4 369 votes were cast with 18 invalid votes from a total of 23 000 registered voters in Cowdray Park giving a voter turnout of 19%.

PovoNews.com previously reported that 18 candidates successfully filed nomination papers to contest the Bulawayo Ward 28 by-election with the MDC Alliance fielding, two rival candidates.

In the 2018 election, MDC Alliance candidate Hapson Nyasha Ncube won the Cowdray Park council seat with 8 514 votes against Zanu-PF’s 3 632, he later passed away in December 2018.

Zanu PF deployed Vice President Kembo Mohadi to campaign for local businessman Mujuru in Cowdray Park at a rally attended by party heavy-weights Obert Mpofu, Omega Hungwe, Mike Bimha , David Parirenyatwa , Tshinga Dube, Absolom Sikhosana and Angeline Masuku.

Ironically Kidwell Mujuru is a former MDC member who was defeated in primary elections to represent the main opposition in Cowdray Park.

Mujuru was also the losing Zanu PF candidate in the same constituency during the 2018 election, his win ensures that the ruling party has one seat versus 29 for the MDC Alliance in Bulawayo City Council.
